RG242
"RG242" is the name of a record group from the US national archives (National archive collection of foreign records seized, 1675-1958). The archive was recently updated with a selection of 1,270 digitised glass plate negatives captured by Heinrich Hoffman between 1920-1944.
Imagery from the archive is presented without context or is redacted, as a representation of the banality of evil - if the images are taken at face value the viewer may not suspect them as Nazi imagery, but on visiting the archive the true context will be revealed. The project presents a distorted and partial version of history, commenting on the power of insignia and the importance of context within visual mediums.
Below are more images from the project, along with the publications made to present the images, grouped in categories and named after archive code of the cover image. A QR code is included at the end of each publication, leading to the archive group and revealing the true context of the images.
